This photograph of some of the men from Haddington’s Home Guard, was taken during World War II. There are only two rifles on visible amongst the ten men present; an indication of how poorly armed much of Britain’s Home Guard were.
This black and white photograph shows ten men from Haddington’s Home Guard standing together in a group. The men are pictured in uniform, with nine out of ten of them wearing protective metal helmets.
Many men, who could not go to fight during World War II due to their age, reserved occupation or poor health, joined Local Defence Volunteer groups. In 1940, these groups became more formalised and were renamed, ‘The Home Guard’. The men of the Home Guard were trained to defend Britain in the event of an enemy invasion.
