Land Girls at Eaglescairnie Farm

The land girls that worked in East Lothian were housed in lodgings and farms across the county. Many had lodgings at a hostel in Eaglescairnie Farm near Stenton.
This black and white photograph was taken throughout World War II and shows a group of nine land girls and a male farm worker at Eaglescairnie farm. All of the girls are dressed in their Land Army issued dungarees.
The Women’s Land Army was formed in June 1939, to help combat the agricultural labour shortage, caused by men enlisting at the outbreak World War II. Between eighty and ninety thousand women worked on farms up and down the country, many carrying out tasks they were unused to or untrained for. These women helped to ensure that vital domestic food supplies were available throughout the war years.
